Whilst it was certainly interesting to read things from Tobias' perspective it was not necessary. Nothing was added to the story and nothing was revealed that wasn't already hinted at before.
For hardcore fans of the Divergent series, this will most definitely be a must-read. Undeniably, I couldn't put the book down and finished it in maybe just over 2 hours. But, and this is a big but, I found myself skimming over most of the pages as it was information we already knew, scenes we had already experienced.
The most interesting scenes to me was the first chapter where we saw moments of his life before Dauntless and before becoming Four. I found this really interesting, and for me this is exactly what prequels or sequels should be doing; filling in the past or the future of characters who may not have received this before. Four very nearly achieved this, but the repetition of familiar scenes made it boring and un-engaging.
If you're a big fan of the Divergent series then I would recommend giving this a read (perhaps with low expectations though), if you struggled through the series and are interested in giving it another chance - don't. This is a book written for the hardcore fans and only the hardcore fans will appreciate it.
